A diverse and visually exciting photography exhibition featuring work by Micky Thompson, Robert Rootes, Nick Tynan, Ken Leslie and Richard Turley.

Micky Thompson

The Giclée limited edition prints are 50×50 cm square and mounted onto aluminium sheet. They are presented stepped off from the wall, without the confines of a surrounding mount or frame.

Micky Thompson’s current body of work centres around the distillation of imagery exploring the graphic within the photographic. This concentration on the essence of the subject creates simplified compositions, sometimes to the point of abstractionism.

Micky Thompson will also be exhibiting as part of the West Berkshire and North Hampshire Open Studios programme during May. www.open-studios.org.uk

Richard Turley

Born in 1979, Richard grew up in such places as Northern Ireland, Germany and Norway, which has contributed to his sense of exploration and intrigue of the world around him.

He has always been passionate about looking at the world from an artistic perspective and studied art and design at university. He is currently working for an interior design company, whilst still managing to find time to indulge in his love of photography and art.

Recently, the focus for his photography is ‘all in the detail’. Inspired by the Cornish coast, he manages to capture the essence of land and sea together.

Shape, colour and line are all important parts in portraying these abstract images from their real objects.

Robert Rootes

Robert started work in London in the late 60’s in fashion Photography. From the early 70’s he worked for 30 years in TV, as a Film/Video editor. Rob is now retired but still continues with his photography with line and light in landscapes & seascapes particularly interesting him.

Nick Tynan

Most of Nick Tynan’s work is carried out indoors in offices, studios and music venues, manipulating people and objects. To balance this, Nick is increasingly interested in working outside with wide ranging landscapes and intimate natural compositions.

The Observer Food Monthly Awards celebrate the very best in British food and produce, from grassroots producers right up to the most renowned celebrity chefs. The awards are in their ninth year and voting takes place through a panel of judges but also, predominantly, by thousands of public votes, ensuring, as celebrity chef Nigel Slater explains

“That those working the length and breadth of the country get a chance to be recognised for their achievements.”

The Observer Food Monthly Award categories range from best Sunday Lunch to Best Producer. And we have been awarded a Best Cheap Eats Award in the regional, runners up, South and West category.

We would like to thank all you loyal customers and friends who voted for us earlier this year after we were nominated. The quantity of votes received by the Observer lead to a member of the judging panel paying a visit and ultimately awarding the Gallery Café ‘finalist’ status. It is really nice to know that our efforts, in serving great food made here on the premises, have been acknowledged in this way. Michael and I would also like to thank our team, particularly in the Café, who have helped us to achieve this national recognition.

We hope this award will encourage more people discover Fisherton Mill and pay us a visit but we will try to ensure that we are never too busy to accommodate our existing customers! Thank you again for your continuing support.

Best wishes

Deborah and Michael

Main & Sons Ltd and to signify that the space, on the first floor overlooking the historic courtyard, is the largest of a number of exhibition sites throughout the building.

The Main family dominate Fisherton Mill’s history and the building itself is an important part of Salisbury’s heritage as the only industrial building left in the city centre. William Main chose Fisherton Street as the location for his Mill as at the time it was situated directly on the Market House railway siding which ran from the station to the Market House, now the City Library. The Mill had several functions which included the bulk cleaning of seed corn and crushing of other grains together with supplying the company’s shop in Salisbury’s market square, today the Nationwide Building Society. These goods were transported by horse and cart; the stables in the courtyard are now Fisherton Mill’s thriving studios housing independent businesses.

As the building was passed down through the Main family, social change made its mark. When William Main died, the business was inherited by his son, Leonard. The business was interrupted from 1914 to 1918 when the Mill was requisitioned by the War Department as bonded warehousing for the Australian Army. It then flourished between 1920 and 1950, but when Leonard’s son, Ronald, took over in the 1960s, mechanisation and great changes to farming methods forced the family to diversify into horticulture and by 1984 the decision was taken to close the business. The historic building has since been a carpet warehouse and an illegal rave venue, but in 1994 Michael Main, the great grandson of the original owner, rescued it and opened The Gallery.

Michael Fox & I successfully ran the Gallery Cafe alongside and then, in 2005, bought Fisherton Mill from the Main family and developed it into the popular and thriving business it is today.
