OBSERVER FOOD MONTHLY AWARDS 2018
Best Cheap Eats in the West
We are delighted to announce that, for the fifth time, we have been selected by the Observer Food Monthly Awards for their "Best Cheap Eats in the West" category. This is all down to you voting for us and so we are thrilled and very grateful to you all.
SALISBURY'S ONLY ENTRY IN THE 2019 GOOD FOOD GUIDE!
We are truly delighted to announce that our Gallery Café is included in the keenly awaited Good Food Guide for 2019. Although a total of 20 Wiltshire eateries feature in the latest Guide, Fisherton Mill is the only outlet listed in Salisbury.
Here's what the Guide has to say: “A unique café providing tasty, interesting and unfailingly fresh food. The menu is innovative and ever-changing, but there is something for everyone, including vegetarian food and our favourite pudding - the gluten-free polenta cake.”
Although we have have won five times in the yearly Observer Food Monthly (OFM) Awards, this is the first time that the Gallery Café has featured in the Good Food Guide. We are so pleased that the Guide has recognised Michael's passion for delicious and healthy home-cooked food.
We'd like to express our sincere thanks to our hard-working staff, as well as to all our customers, especially those who have recommended us to the Guide. With their support, we will continue to keep Salisbury's flag flying on the UK food map.
Please help spread the word - visitors to Salisbury should definitely make a date to eat at the Gallery Café!
ON SALE NOW - FISHERTON MILL CALENDAR 2019
For the first time, we have put together and are selling our very own Fisherton Mill Calendar. A contribution from the sale of each calendar will be going to charity.
13 artists who regularly have their work on show with us here at Fisherton Mill have very generously let us use one of their artworks for the calendar and Francesca Mclean, local artist and illustrator, has produced some beautiful calligraphy for the pages too. we are really delighted with the results and we hope you will be!
To make our calendar even more special, it includes 13 months rather than 12! In November and December, we often find that we need to write down dates of things happening the following January but there is usually nowhere to do it on a regular calendar. So we have addressed that problem by adding in an extra page for January 2020!
The calendar is on sale now in the Gallery shop for £7.95. £2.50 from the sale of each calendar will be going to support Julia's House, our chosen charity for this year.

TOILET TWINNING - A WATER AND SANITATION INITIATIVE
Now that the renovation of our toilets is almost complete, we are feeling very priviledged and wanted to share our good fortune by twinning our toilets with some in Milawi.
By donating £60 to twin a toilet, we can assist people in poverty to have access to a proper latrine, clean water and the information they need to be healthy.
In return we get a certificate, a colour photo of our twin toilet and GPS coordinates so that we can look our twin’s location up on Google Maps.
We have requested our twin toilets and are now waiting for further information.
Once the system is all up and running, you will find a donations box in the toilets asking for you to "spend a penny when you spend a penny"! There is no obligation to do this, but if you want to then the pennies collected will also go towards supporting this very worthwhile cause.

OPPORTUNITY TO BE RESIDENT JEWELLER --
Fisherton Mill will shortly have a studio vacancy ideally suited for a resident jeweller. Our current jeweller is sadly relocating to her hometown Winchester leaving the opportunity open for a new jeweller to take up the position at Fisherton Mill. The first floor studio is bright and airy with original wooden floors and a view over the courtyard. The terms are flexible and affordable and the Mill is easily accessed from the City Centre and public transport.
If you are familiar with Fisherton Mill you will know we have an award winning café, gallery shop and exhibition spaces as well as a lovely community of makers on site alongside other small creative businesses and we have always had a jeweller to fulfil demand for commissions and repairs etc. as well as selling pieces. PETER MATTHEWS PRIVATE VIEW OF "NEW PAINTINGS" EXHIBITION
Friday 25th May 6pm - 8.30pm
Peter Matthews is having a Private View of his exhibition "New Paintings" on Friday 25th May 2018 from 6pm to 8.30pm and you are all most welcome to attend! Come along, have a chat with the artist and enjoy a glass of wine and some nibbles as you have a leisurely look at his new work, some figurative and some abstract.
SALISBURY - CITY OF DOVES
Salisbury Cathedral is hosting a major art installation that carries a message of resilience, peace and hope. Les Colombes by multimedia artist Michael Pendry features a flock of around 2,500 white origami doves that ‘fly’ the length of the Cathedral nave. The installation opens to the public on Saturday 12 May.
Alongside the installation #SalisburyCityofDoves, a community project inspired by Michael Pendry’s work extends the message across the city. Shops, homes and schools are being encouraged to make paper doves and display them in their premises as a simple but powerful symbol of the city’s resilience in response to the nerve agent attack. We are delighted to be taking part in this and we have paper and instructions available for you here so that you can have a go. You can either take your dove home with you or leave it with us to be part of our large dove display.
We are also holding a drop-in "Make and Cake" event where you can come along to make some origami doves with us and also partake in some free cake! The date of this event is Thursday 10th May at 5.30 - 7.30pm.
If you have been to visit us in the last couple of weeks, you will know that we are in the process of having our toilets renovated. At the moment, it is the men's toilet that is being totally reconstructed. The work is now very near to completion.
The ladies toilets are also in line for a complete update. The work is scheduled for just after Easter.
We are so grateful to you all for your patience whilst all this is happening.
SAYING NO TO PLASTIC STRAWS
At Fisherton Mill, we are saying no to plastic straws and will only be using paper ones from now on, if requested.
The global movement to eliminate plastic drinking straws from our landfills, our streams, our oceans, and our beaches is picking up momentum now. People are refusing plastic straws and requesting that restaurants & cafés provide biodegradable alternatives, where needed.
Here are some steps you can take to help with this movement:
Level 1: Make a personal commitment to say "no" to plastic straws. When you order a drink, please say “no plastic straw, please.” Encourage your friends and family to do the same.
Level 2: Ask your favourite restaurants, cafés, bars, clubs and pubs to join in with this movement.
Level 3: If they need or wish to continue providing straws for customers, please ask them to change to an environmentally friendly version - eg. paper.
** LOVER VILLAGE VALENTINE'S DAY POSTAL SERVICE VIA FISHERTON MILL **
This year we are joining forces and working exclusively with the Lover Village Valentine Postal Service to help people send their cards from 'the most romantic village in the world.'
This is the second year that the Lover village Post Office has been running this special service and we are truly delighted to be involved.
To take part is simple:
1. Choose a card in our Gallery shop, write your message and address the envelope.
2. Hand it to one of our Gallery staff members.
3. Costs vary depending on the card you choose (from £3 to £8) but all options include the special processing in Lover.
4. Post the card in the Fisherton Mill post box on the counter by Saturday 10th February 2018.
The Lover cupids will collect the cards and process them from the village, stamping each one with a special cachet stamp on the envelope to mark its origin before they are sent from the village to your loved one in time for 14th February.
Part of the proceeds from each purchase will go to the Lover Community Trust.
Read more on the Lover village website.
** FISHERTON MILL WORKSHOP GIFT VOUCHERS NOW AVAILABLE **
We have just introduced our Fisherton Mill Workshop Gift Vouchers! They are a really great present for anyone in your life who enjoys being creative!
These vouchers can be put towards the cost of any workshop running here at Fisherton Mill in the year after their purchase, either being put on by one of our Studios or by outside practitioners.
You can buy these gift vouchers in person in our Gallery shop or online via our Online Shop.
** TO CLAY PRACTITIONERS IN THE SALISBURY AREA **
Hey Clay! is returning next year from the 23rd to the 25th March 2018 and we are very much hoping to be involved with this again.
Organised by the Crafts Council, it is a national celebration of clay which gives everyone the chance to unleash their inner potter at venues across the UK through free workshops and taster sessions.
The only stipulation by the organisers is that the participation sessions are free. Whilst this is a big ask for clay practitioners and the venues hosting them, the hope is that taking part will bring in new audiences and that being part of a national campaign will help practitioners and venues raise their profiles.
Hey Clay! will once more be part of Get Creative (which is being extended to ten days, taking place from 17-26 March) meaning that the BBC will be promoting it on national and regional radio and online. Several Hey Clay! 2017 venues were featured on regional radio stations and one of our Hey Clay! makers threw a pot on air in the Radio 5 Live studio!
We will need to return our event listings forms to Hey Clay! 2018 by 15th January 2018, but earlier if possible, so if you are a clay practitioner interested in helping us be a part of Hey Clay! 2018 again, then please do get in touch as soon as possible.
Festive Opening Hours
In the run up to Christmas, we will be opening slightly different hours during the week and on Saturdays and are open every Sunday from 26th November onwards from 11am to 4pm. The Café will be open on Sundays for drinks and cakes only.
Please note that we are open 9am to 2pm on Christmas Eve in the Gallery shop for any last minute bits and pieces you need to buy as presents!
We'll look forward to seeing you here for a bit of calm, enjoyable Christmas shopping away from all the crowds.
Observer Food Monthly 'Best Cheap Eats in the West 2017'
We are delighted to announce that the Gallery Café is a winner in the highly prized Observer Food Monthly (OFM) Awards for 2017. Named as one of three winners of 'Best Cheap Eats in the West', the OFM praised Fisherton Mill Gallery Café as follows: "An 1880 grain mill with a gallery and a café which spills out into the courtyard on fine days. Imaginative, well-priced menus."
We're genuinely humbled to get this award again and we would like to express our gratitude to all of our customers - regulars, occasional visitors and one-off visitors - who all help to make the Gallery Café such a success. We look forward to welcoming you in the months coming up to Christmas and into 2018!
